Since the days of just the 2 of us, before there are just the 3 of us, are numbered, I'm thinking I should write down the banal stuff we do in these last few weeks...for posterity. As much as we have been planning, we are at the point of "Oh hey, we really should get that car seat installed" and a few other things that haven't been crossed off the list, yet. And we are trying to seize the preciousness of these last days of relative freedom.
LAST weekend, I took Donavon on a mystery ride - a longstanding family tradition that he is trying to embrace, although they usually make him nervous. I surprised him (kind of) with Quantum of Solace, opening weekend, at the new Landmark Theater in Harbor East. That place is sweet. Bond and a beer - I think he was happy. The seats are comfy enough for an 8 month pregnant lady, which is saying something. It was one of our last date nights without requiring babysitters and nursing arrangements. As unwieldy as I am getting, I want to fit as many of these nights in as possible.
During the week we made the uber important champagne purchase. We got a half bottle for the two (three?) of us, for right after he is born, and then another to celebrate when the whole family arrives. Something exciting about having champagne chilling and waiting. That is the general mood in the house - chilling and waiting.
Yesterday, I went on a diaper buying spree. It occurred to me that will need a serious supply of them. We are planning to use cloth, but for the first few weeks, not knowing if he is small...and with the umbilical cord care...and since we don't know what we are doing...and since there will be lots of family around, I figured it might be wise to have disposables on hand. Just a whacky thought. And although I bought about 8 or so newborn cloth diapers a few months ago, that is not nearly enough. So I finally rounded out the supply, including a cool trial package with all the different types that allows you to return whatever you don't like. (And yes, there are MANY types of cloth diapers - it is way beyond the white squares of cotton these days.)
A portion of every day is inevitably spent doing laundry, washing all of the new baby items that smell like plastic or just plain weird. (I realize this will still be the case when there is an actual baby, although stuff will smell weird for other reasons.)
For today, the big fun was a trip to IKEA for some last minute things. We got a Poang chair for the nursery (gift of Grandma) and a few other baby things. Like crib mattress protectors and other boring items that babies need. We also bought meatballs because those IKEA meatballs are greasy and salty and tasty (not for the baby).
I spent a good fifteen minutes of my life amused by the Sarah Palin interview shot on a farm, unfortunately in front of the guy bleeding struggling turkeys for slaughter.
Otherwise, we had a quiet night in, with Donavon's chili for dinner and watching last night's episode of The Office. Sparky had big hiccups shortly after I ate and was moving around for about 10-15 minutes. From now until bed time I will practice Hypnobirthing stuff with Donavon. And we'll probably take a minute or two to watch some puppy cam. Those guys are getting big and rowdy.
